Silverpond: Businesses powered by Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning is a big part of our lives. But AI and machine learning has been found to have bias. Susie joins Jan Fran and Mark Fennell to discuss AI Ethics, using AI for good, the type of work we do…and what we won’t work on.

As well as being a brilliant Silverponder, Ruth is also a mentor for the Young Women Leaders in AI program. On this podcast she shares her journey into AI, discusses how VetAI could prevent kidney disease in cats and her advice for other women in working in tech.

We’re chuffed to have been asked onto our favourite local radio tech show, “Byte into IT” a couple of times now. Last year Lyndon and Jono joined the team to talk about Highlighter. Susie was also a guest on the show following the release of the 2019 Australian AI Ecosystem Survey.

Silverpond Data Scientist Lizzie Silver also presented at the February MLAI Meetup. As our resident Causal expert Lizzie  discussed Nair, Zhu, Savarese and Li’s paper from NeurIPS 2019.

As part of her internship at Silverpond Arushi implemented the Copy Paste technique for synthetic image data generation. In this talk, Arushi takes us through the project, challenges faced and the results.

2019 Australian AI Ecosystem Survey
In addition to the survey results and analysis there are interviews with AI Leaders:

Agustinus Nalwan – Head of AI & ML @ Carsales
Jonathan Chang – CEO @ Silverpond
Katherine Bailey -AI Senior Principal @ Accenture
Tim Miller – Associate Professor @ University of Melbourne
Toby Walsh – Scientia Professor @ UNSW

2018 Victorian AI Ecosystem Report

Data Science Melbourne Meetup
Thursday 26th March
717 Bourke St

Our resident Causal expert and Data Scientist Lizzie Silver will be delighting the local data science community with her talk on Causal Inference

Causal Inference: Tools & Commercial Applications

Causal inference techniques are generating interest right now, but it’s often unclear when and how to apply them in industry. I’ll start by introducing the basic concepts & formal tools of causal inference, and provide a set of example applications in advertising, medicine, user behaviour modelling, and more. In the second half of the talk I’ll give a case study on algorithmic fairness in finance. I’ll show how causal tools can be used to de-bias a discriminatory loan-granting algorithm, even if the training data has bias “baked in”.

Data (R)Evolution Conference
Tuesday 19th November

Consumer data is now a major input to production, with data-fuelled technologies and industries to deliver some of the most significant economic growth over the coming decade. Ensuring that the benefits and value of digital innovation are being fairly shared with consumers will be central to long-term and sustainable growth.

Join CPRC and experts from across sectors to discuss:
*Consumer choice and autonomy in the digital age
*Open Data and the promise of innovation
*Data and exploitation – privacy, human rights, product safety, market power
*Differing approaches being taken to policy and regulation of digital markets around the world

The Virtual Power Plants, New Energy Storage and Renewable Energy Innovations Global Summit 2019
13th-15th November
The InterContinental Melbourne

Our Head of Science, Adel Foda, will be presenting alongside Peter McTaggart from Powercor Citi Power on our work together  “Making Smarter Networks using Smart Meters and Advanced Analytics”

Australia’s energy sector has been transforming constantly, production of renewable energy rising, partly owing to the realization that burning fossil fuels for electricity was contributing to climate change, along with Australia’s potential to generate energy from green sources, and its commitment to international environmental goals.

Virtual Power Plants are now the talk of the town. More nuanced systems are being developed to integrate large numbers of small scale solar systems and batteries into the grid. Once successful, they will be able to apply market principles to deploy and reward these distributed energy resources (DERs).

AI in Healthcare Symposium 2019
Saturday 21st September
Southern Cross University, Gold Coast Campus

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a hot topic in healthcare, sparking ongoing debate about ethical, clinical and financial pros and cons. Complex algorithms will soon help clinicians make incredibly accurate determinations about health from large amounts of information, premised on largely unexplainable correlations in that data. This future might be alarming to some, but it’s a future we must prepare for.
