I spent the weekend at Gold Coast University Hospital, Gold Coast, QLD. I was attending the Young Women Leaders in AI Residential as a mentor to a diverse set of amazing women who came to develop their knowledge and skills in the field of AI.
The weekend was designed as a prototype for a 6-day program which will run annually, with a goal to equip women with the skills and knowledge to become future leaders in AI.
The weekend contained workshops on machine learning, preparing a start up pitch, AI ethics and an inspirational talk. The inspirational talk was given by science communicator Dr Emily Grossman, who talked about her experiences as a woman in science, as well as how via various careers she has combined her passion for science and drama into a career as a science communicator. Throughout the weekend there was lots of chatting and idea sharing, and plenty of hands on activities to apply learning to test scenarios.
I took part in a careers panel, where I talked about my trajectory to AI via academic physics, and outlined some of the difficulties I’ve faced as a woman in STEM.
All in all it was a great weekend and we’re excited for the next one!
